Q: Thanks for meeting with me! How did your unique buyer’s journey begin?

A: My brother invited me and my family to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC to see My Fair Lady, last Sunday.

Q: Wow. For free?

A: Yeah. He works for the Boys and Girls Club and they had a couple last minute cancellations, so he called us and asked if we wanted to go with him.

Q: Using free tickets? I definitely would have gone.

A: Me too. And the Kennedy Center is a beautiful place — right on the water, beautiful chandeliers, and the actors were incredible as well.

Q: Sure it wasn’t a brand new play or concert and sure it’s been running for many decades but the cast filled the theatre, being able to draw in grandparents, parents, and grandchildren — all during the Christmas break?

A: They did. It was packed. And a few weeks before, there was some other play — maybe the Nutcracker that my brother invited a few of us to at the same place.

Q: Must be nice to have friends in high places, eh?

A: Well my brother explained it to me like this — sometimes when the Nationals or the Redskins want to have a “full house” or “sold out” game they will donate some of the tickets to charities like the Boys and Girls Club. I think we got to see Cirque du Soleil that way too.

Q: Okay. That all sounds awesome. How did My Fair Lady lead you to InstaCart?

A: I was trying to finish ordering groceries before we went to see My Fair Lady because we were already out of milk, eggs, and bread. So I used Instacart to order my groceries from Aldi’s. It usually costs $9 for the driver’s tip but this time it cost $9 for the driver’s tip plus $3 that my husband tipped the driver, not knowing he had already been paid plus $9 for the delivery fee plus tip (that’s what the emailed receipt says), plus $4 as the service fee.

Q: How did that make you feel?

A: Frustrated. Powerless. It wasn’t like Amazon where you view all the charges before your final check out. I’m not using InstaCart again after that. I mean — I would be fine with it if they disclosed it but if they simply updated their terms and asked their users to check a box saying they agreed to the new terms, that’ s not cool.

Q: I’m not surprised you felt that way. I have felt that same way as well — not buyer’s remorse when Amazon shows you an item that’s ten times or 10X smaller when you receive it in the mail.

A: Yep. I’ve been there too.
